Overall backpack is bright in color and the whale designs are fit for whale lovers/interests. It is a perfect size for a preschooler! We pack in our preschoolers bag: an emergency set of clothes (in a gallon size plastic zip bag), a bottle of water and sometimes a couple of snacks and monster trucks. All fits in the bigger compartment just fine with some room to spare. The size pocket while meant for a water bottle isn't truly deep enough so the water bottle may fall out when moving. Great for everyday use to and from preschool or play date. As for traveling, I honestly think its too small to fit all the things your preschooler may need to be entertained in flight for example. But if it is just for them to have and feel like their a big kid, its just the right size.
